Why I Started Evolution RoofWorks (And Why the Industry Needed It)

The honest truth is that I didn't get into roofing because I had a lifelong passion for it. I got into it because it had one of the worst reputations in an already reputation-challenged industry, and I believed someone needed to do it differently.

I spent years in construction before making roofing my specialty. Along the way, I heard the same stories over and over from friends, family members, and people I barely knew once they found out what I did for a living: the contractor who took a deposit and disappeared, the job that dragged on for months with no communication, the "lifetime warranty" that covered almost nothing when it finally mattered.

These weren't isolated incidents. This was the industry operating the way it had always operated, because no one was making it cost more to do things wrong.

What I Kept Hearing From People

The Contractor Who Never Came Back

The most common story: a homeowner hires someone after getting a single quote, pays a deposit, and then the contractor goes quiet. Phone calls go unanswered. Work starts late or doesn't start at all. By the time the homeowner realizes what's happening, they're out money and still have an unfinished roof.

The Same-Day High-Pressure Close

The second version: a salesperson shows up with a laptop full of financing options and a discount that expires today. The homeowner, who has never replaced a roof before and has no way to evaluate the quote, signs something they weren't fully ready to sign. A week later, questions come up that no one answers.

The Replacement-Only Company

There are roofing companies that only do replacements. They don't offer repairs. They don't offer maintenance. When they inspect your roof, every assessment ends in the same direction because it's the only option they can bill for. I would strongly recommend not calling one of them if you want an honest evaluation of whether you actually need a full replacement.

Why I Chose Roofing Specifically

Roofing has one of the worst reputations even amongst construction. So I figured, if I'm going to try to make a difference, might as well go into the shadiest industry. That's actually how I put it when I started. It wasn't cynical, it was honest.

The gap between what good roofing practice looks like and what common roofing practice looks like is enormous. Most homeowners only deal with a roof project a handful of times in their life. They have no baseline for what's normal, no way to evaluate a quote, no experience with the process. That information gap gets exploited constantly.

I wanted to be the contractor who closed that gap instead of using it.

What I Built Evolution RoofWorks Around

Education First, Always

We know homeowners don't deal with a roof project many times in their life. So when I sit down with someone, I come in and provide as much or as little education as they want to get them well-versed in what they're buying. What materials mean, what warranty terms actually say, what the installation process looks like, what they should be watching out for when hiring anyone in this industry.

That's the first thing. Not a close. An education.

Repair Is Always on the Table

One of the first things I built into Evolution RoofWorks was the commitment to always offer repair as an option when repair is viable. Not every roof needs replacement. Not every homeowner is well-served by replacement, even when a replacement would pay me more. The job is to give people an honest assessment of their specific roof, not to sell them the most expensive solution.

No Same-Day Close

We don't close same-day with the homeowner in the home. We give people four pricing options on the same day so they have real information to make a decision, and then we let them think. We don't do incessant follow-up. We're not salesy. We're more just advocates.

Getting CertainTeed Certified

One of the most important decisions I made early on was pursuing CertainTeed certification. It's not a simple process. CertainTeed requires training, testing, and background checks. But what it unlocks for homeowners is significant: a 50-year fully non-prorated warranty that covers not just shingles but removal, disposal, flashings, and everything else a standard warranty typically excludes.

In an industry where "lifetime warranty" is used as a marketing phrase that often means very little, I wanted to be able to offer something that actually holds up when a homeowner needs it. That's what the CertainTeed certification made possible.

What Evolution RoofWorks Looks Like Today

We're based in Tigard and serve the greater Portland metro area, including Beaverton, Aloha, Lake Oswego, and the west side generally. We do residential asphalt shingle roofing, inspections, repairs, maintenance, moss treatment, and gutter work. Every inspection includes getting on the roof and going into the attic, because that's where you actually find out what's happening.
